MoF schreef:

For a lover of beauty. Order the collector coin from Mint of Finland's online outlet store from 20 February 2012.

A celebration of the artistry of the Finnish goldsmith. Mint of Finland's Fabergé coin tells the story of a Finnish boy who became one of the most famous Fabergé workmasters in the world. You can order the coin that will delight goldsmiths, lovers of fine jewellery and admirers of luxury items alike from Mint of Finland's online outlet store from 20 February on.

The collector coin minted in proof quality is packaged in a fine gift package that tells a story of the coin.

Having left to become an apprentice in St Petersburg at the age of just 13, Henrik Wigström (1862-1923) was Fabergé's head workmaster for 15 years until the Russian revolution forced Fabergé to shut down its workshops.

To this day, Finns have been able to enjoy the master craft of Wigström's contemporary goldsmiths. This is all thanks to the fact that after the Russian revolution, the Finnish goldsmiths returned to their country of birth, in turn conveying their skills to new generations of craftsmen. At that time, 20 per cent of all goldsmiths working in St Petersburg were Finnish.

An Imperial collector coin

Mint of Finland's Fabergé coin depicts the famous Easter eggs made by Wigström for the Russian Tsar and his wife.

The obverse side of the goldsmiths' coin depicts an unfinished Easter egg and a graver. The collector coin is a souvenir of the "Coronation" Easter egg, a gift by Nicholas II to his consort Empress Aleksandra Feodorovna on Easter 13 April 1897. Henrik Wigström was responsible for the production of the egg and his signature on the inside of the shell bears testimony to this.

The reverse side of the collector coin depicts a swan, in homage to another example of Wigström's exquisite workmanship, the "Swan" Easter egg. The surprise within the egg is a swan made of platinum, gold and prescious stones, swimming on a lake of aquamarine.

The collector coin has been designed by sculptor Pertti Mäkinen, who also designed the national side of the Finnish one-euro coin.

A part of a European coin collection

The 'Henrik Wigström and European artists' collector coin is Finland's contribution to the European Silver Star collector coin programme organized by mints around Europe. Since 2004, several European countries have participated in the programme by issuing coins under a unified theme.

Mint of Finland schreef:

The Equality and Tolerance collector coin is available for order from Mint of Finland's online outlet store from 19 March.

The mark of tolerance. By owning the Equality and Tolerance collector coin, you are making a statement about what these words mean to you. President Tarja Halonen is the patron of the collector coin. The Equality and Tolerance collector coin is to be issued on 19 March 2012, the Day of Equality.

According to UNESCO's definition, tolerance is the acceptance that people of different appearance, status, speech, behaviour and values have the same right to live in peace and be as they are.

The coin has been designed by art student Katri Piri.

As a gift or a souvenir

The glassy proof coin comes packaged in a beautiful gift box, bound with a stylish violet ribbon. The coin's technical information is presented alongside the coin in the gift pack, which bears the signature of Mint of Finland's CEO as a mark of authenticity.

The coin's story is told on the base of the gift pack, which explains why the Ministry of Finance have decided to issue this collector coin.

The glassy proof Equality and Tolerance collector coin is also available in a clear Vitriini case. In this glass case, the coin becomes an elegant decoration for the home – it gleams proudly on any bookshelf and provides a strong reminder of Finnish values.

The unpolished collector coin will be available in a clear plastic pill box, in which the coin retains its silver gleam. The coin comes with a certificate of authenticity, which proves the coin's Finnish origin and gives the coin's key details.

Mint of Finland schreef:

The Mint of Finland is releasing a set of coins to celebrate Nordic nature on 1 October 2012
Coins beckon you into the nature

Even if Nordic people live downtown and spend their days indoors, nature is always near in these parts. And yet we do not always remember to delight in the enormous richness of species around us and the landscape that changes its appearance with the turn of the seasons. The new Nordic Nature set of coins reminds us of the most fantastic features of our diverse environment and celebrates the unity of nature and man in the North.

Three coins immortalise the greatest features of Nordic nature

Nature is a fitting subject for coin motifs, since metal coinage is a highly ecological payment method. Coins are commonly made of metal melted down from old coins, and they can last up to 30 years in circulation. The Nordic Nature coin set has also been packaged into coin pouches manufactured from recycled materials for the Mint of Finland by Globe Hope.

In its design, the first commemorative coin in the set, entitled Flora, features a Glacier Crowfoot – a hardy plant especially famous for its ability to blossom in the snow. The fauna of the North will also receive its own commemorative coin, depicting the paw marks left by an Arctic Fox in gentle snowfall. The third coin in the series immortalises the beautiful winter of the North, when the white snows are lit by blazing auroras and the bright starry sky. Responsible for the coins' look is the grand old man of Finnish coin design, Reijo Paavilainen, whose work has charmed both coin aficionados and the Collector Coin Committee responsible for coin design competitions over the years.
The Mint of Finland encourages children and families to exercise

This autumn, nature is full of treasures not only in its riot of colour, but also thanks to the Mint of Finland. The TV programme Elixir, focusing on exercise and wellness, will launch the Elixir Hidden Treasure nature adventure in cooperation with the Mint of Finland. The event encourages families to exercise in the autumn nature. In every episode, broadcast on Nelonen on Sundays, famous athletes will hide a treasure in the lap of nature for children and the young at heart to find. Once the Nordic Nature coin set has been released, the Mint of Finland will donate a set to each child to be the first to find a treasure – every proper treasure contains a hoard of coins after all! Elixir on Nelonen, every Sunday at 11.15 a.m.

The Nordic Nature coin set will be available in the Mint of Finland's online Outlet Store from 1 October. The coins are available for purchase as sets of three proof-quality coins, or as individual BU-quality pieces.

Photographs of the coins will be published in week 39.

The Mint of Finland is indulging coin collectors in October with many new launches.

The much-anticipated special two euro coin will be launched on 5 October and you can purchase it as part of our fabulous coin sets. The illustrations of the BU II coin set, which celebrates the role of art in coins, give an insight into the artistic side of the coin manufacturing process. In line with tradition, the Proof coin set comprises all of this year’s glassy coated coins in an impressive wooden case. Both coin sets contain both of 2012’s special two euro coins.

Mint of Finland schreef:

A tribute to one of the main builders of Finnish welfare society

The commemorative coin dedicated to Arvo Ylppö speaks with the voice of grateful children

With the authorisation of the Ministry of Finance, the Mint of Finland is publishing a commemorative coin to honour Arvo Ylppö. The coin celebrating the distinguished physician, who always worked for the future of families, reminds us of the importance of medicine and health care. The commemorative coin is made of silver, with a nominal value of 10 euros.

For Arvo Ylppö (1887–1992), children always came first. The coin commemorating Finnish health pays tribute to a persistent visionary, who understood the significance of freely and equally available health care.

A contest was held to select the design for the commemorative coin, and 12 proposals were received. The Collector Coin Committee chose the work submitted by sculptor Reijo Paavilainen as the winner. The design is heavy with symbolism and uses colour in an interesting and playful manner. The obverse depicts Lastenlinna (Children's Castle) hospital, where Arvo Ylppö worked for 43 years as chief physician. Ylppö spent his long life working for the welfare of the Finnish people. As a token of gratitude, the names of children inscribed on the coin spell the word "kiitos", "thank you" in Finnish.

Health care made Finland into a trendsetter

Arvo Ylppö is, without a doubt, one of the foremost builders of Finnish society. The distinguished physician was a ground-breaking scientist, father of the Finnish child health clinic system, and teacher of paediatricians. He is also fondly remembered for his own paediatric work. Infant mortality is one of the key global indicators of welfare. The reduction of infant mortality in Finland to the lowest in the world is one of the achievements in the field of health care, for which Ylppö made a decisive contribution.

Arvo Ylppö dedicated his life to helping children

Arvo Ylppö studied in Helsinki and Germany. On the basis of his German experiences, Ylppö started to develop the Finnish health care system and created the foundation for the child health clinic system that now spans the country. Ylppö also wrote popular guides for mothers, which was a new approach to improving child health at the time. In Ylppö's view, children also had the right to have fun, which contributed to the improvement of the rights of children and moulded our concept of a good childhood.

Ylppö was one of the founding members of the Mannerheim League for Child Welfare and held a professorship in paediatrics at the University of Helsinki for more than thirty years (1925–1957).

Arvo Ylppö had six children of his own, and he continued his paediatric work at his private practice to the age of 90.
