Best way to sell in NL?

Bericht door jkv20000 »

I currently have a large amount of coins for sale on my ebay account (link in profile ;) ) almost all of them being Dutch. Im based In the UK so sales are always going to be slower than they could be. Ebay adds 20% automatically to the prices for eu people so Im trying to price low enough that people in the NL would buy them.
My Girlfriend is in the Netherlands so in theory an album could go out with me in January and The coins could stay in the NL (My girlfriend would probably post them for me)
Is there a better way to get rid of them than setting up a NL Ebay account, I understand ebay isnt as popular as marktpaats?
I will pay a visit to munthandel Smit anyway probably but obviously dealers have to make a profit too and im not sure what kind of offers they give in regards to buying.
Is there another method I am not thinking of?

Many thanks as always,
Jacob

What's up Jacob,

The way i see it there are several options:
- You could explore if there are coins you want to let go that are 'auctionable' (did I just make this word up?). There are several Dutch auction houses you could consult about the types of coins you have to offer;
- Here at the forum we have a section where you can offer coins. Lots are also possible;
- There are several coin dealers whom you could consult and get an appraisal if they are interested. You could visit the Oudejaarsbeurs in Houten at the 28th or 29th of December. Maybe you could seduce one of the dealers there to make you an offer; and
- You mentioned ebay and marktplaats but this costs you a lot of time and effort.

After seeing the coins on sale in your ebay account, I'd try to find a dealer who wants to take them all at once. This will cost you a big discount because the dealer needs to make money too and is taking the risk of not selling them quickly, but it will solve your problem and immediately gets you cash for your war chest for new rijksdaalders and maybe some gold Provincial coins...

Good luck with the project!

thanks for the reply!
At the moment the ebay stuff isnt too much of a hassle (I Just finished university and have decided not to go immediately into something else), I hope to be located in NL at some point in the future which would make everything easier but that probably wont be soon.

Do you have any idea how much dealers offer in comparison to retail? like should I expect half of retail? (I know maybe a bad question) or have you any experience in selling to dealers?
Would you say you would make more from an auction than a dealer?
I dont know if it is best to take quick money vs maximising profit, I dont want to be stupid with it buit also not hold on for too long

On the note of rijksdaalders theres a one missing from my collection coming up in a famous dutch auction soon, wish me luck ;) Only nice examples of 29,30,31,37 and 38 gh left to complete 1929-2001. (I dont know if i will continue all the way back to 1808, ive seen the price for a lod nap 2 1/2 gulden and I will not have the money for that for a long while. I did have some of them i just wanted pr-fdc examples as they werent the best condition really.

If selling your coins on ebay or marktplaats isn't much of a hassle and you don't mind spending time on it, then I wouldn't change anything. Just be patient.

I have no idea how much dealers offer vs market prices. We have some dealers here at the forum, maybe one of them wants to give you some insights but I wouldn't be surprised if they rather keep that to themselves. My estimate would be the same as yours, like 50-60% of market value on stock that is relatively easy to resell. Maybe 40% for the more difficult coins that have a high risk of remaining 'on the shelves' for quite some time. I don't know, maybe I'm way off. I've never sold coins to dealers. I've only bought a few of my coins from one dealer, but I prefer auctions for the excitement / buzz and possibilities of making awesome deals, like what happened to me last time.
Whether an auction is more profitable than selling to a dealer depends on several factors. It's possible but there is also a risk that you lose at an auction when there's no reserve and there is only one bidder. It's all in the game. You should do some research on the hammer prices of your coins at recent auctions, that gives a lot of information and with it you can manage your expectations.

Good luck with getting that special rijksdaalder that's missing in your collection. I won't bid against you :knipoog: I have no idea what a 'lod nap 2 1/2 gulden' is... On my wish list is a Noble of King Edward III, a Leicester noble, a noble from Zeeland from 1583 and 1585, a Noble Guyennois first emission of Edward the Black Prince and gold coins of any of the old counts of Holland and Zeeland. Next year I'll have a full auction war chest, so I'm hopeful one of the forementioned coins will be added to my collection.

Enjoy your evening!

All cool coins, way out of my price range do you specialise in nobles? . and I meant a 1808 Lodewijk Napoleon 2 1/2 gulden, nice enough one is $5-7k so not for a long time sadly. I might trade my way up slowly but at my stage in life I couldnt justify buying one unless I won the lottery
