In January 2013 Národná banka Slovenska announced a public competition for the design of a €10 silver collector coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jozef Murgaš, a pioneer of radiotelegraphy, scientist, and world-class inventor. A total of twelve designs by thirteen designers were anonymously entered in the competition (one of the entries had two designers). In March 2013 the designs were judged by the NBS Governor's Committee for the Assessment of Slovak Euro Coin Designs, which was assisted in this task by an expert advisor, Ing. Jozef Roman from the Slovak Technical Museum in Košice.

The design that won first prize was by akad. soch. Ivan Řehák, and it will be used for the collector coin. The Committee praised the winning entry for the way both the obverse and reverse designs strike a balance between form and content, with elements that highlight the inventor side of Jozef Murgaš as well as other aspects of his life's work. With a modern, dynamic composition, the obverse design depicts in the centre the antenna mast that Murgaš used for his first wireless telegraphy transmission in Wilkes-Barre (United States). The design expertly incorporates lines representing radio waves, which give an ethereal and timeless effect. The reverse design features a faithful portrait of Jozef Murgaš with his name written in incused lettering. The visage of Murgaš is set against a background of field lines, shaped to represent a globe and by extension the global impact of Murgaš's inventions.

Second prize was awarded to a design jointly entered by Mgr. art. Alžbeta Malcová and Pavel Karoly, which was praised by the Committee for its high-quality artwork. In the design for the obverse side, transmission masts form the central motif and they are skilfully complemented by depictions of radio waves. The overall composition has a dynamic effect that is enhanced by its sculptural treatment. The reverse design features an asymmetrically-positioned portrait of Jozef Murgaš, with his name and the years of his birth and death written in deeply incused lettering in the lower left part. The composition is balanced on the right-hand side by a relief depiction of an electrical transformer, one of Murgaš's inventions.

Third prize went to a design by Karol Ličko, which was praised by the Committee for the balance in its composition and content. The obverse design shows some of Murgaš's inventions, specifically the antenna mast at Wilkes-Barre that he used for the first wireless transmission and an electrical transformer. The reverse design features a portrait of Murgaš, along with a cathedral building in reference to his vocation as a priest.

The silver collector coin is due to be issued in January 2014.

Statement from the 20th meeting of the Bank Board of Národná banka Slovenska

30. 07. 2013 | Press Release of the NBS

The 20th meeting of the Bank Board of Národná banka Slovenska was held today (30 July 2013) and was chaired by Jozef Makúch, the NBS Governor.

The Bank Board took note of the NBS Monthly Bulletin for July 2013, which will be published on the NBS website.

The Bank Board decided that a €10 silver collector coin commemorating the 300th anniversary of the birth of the musician Edmund Pascha will be removed from the 2014 issue plan for Slovak commemorative and collector coins.

The decision was taken after experts at the Slovak Academy of Sciences (from the Institute of Musicology and Ján Stanislav Institute of Slavistics) disclosed new information indicating that significant Baroque compositions credited to Edmund Pascha were not written by him.

In July 2013, Národná banka Slovenska announced a public anonymous competition for the design of a 100-euro gold collector coin to commemorate the historically eminent figure of Rastislav the ruler of Great Moravia. In October 2013, the entries were judged by the NBS Governor's Committee for the Assessment of Designs for Slovak Euro Coins. The Committee reached the opinion that none of the eleven designs submitted was suitable for the coin and recommended that a second round of the competition be announced, this time restricted to those authors of the top three entries, requesting particular modifications in terms of both their artistic design and content. Comments regarding the aspect of the designs' content were presented by the historian Ján Steinhübel, CSc., expert advisor to the Committee. The NBS Bank Board agreed to the committee's proposal and decided to announce a second, restricted, round of the competition and invited the authors, Mgr. art. Roman Lugár, Miroslav Rónai and Branislav Ronai, to enter it.

All three invited authors entered the restricted round of competition and their designs were judged by the Committee at the end of November 2013. Based on a recommendation of the Committee, the NBS Bank Board approved for the coin a design by Mgr. art. Roman Lugár, who won the first prize in the competition. The Committee expressed its appreciation of his design from both the artistic and content aspects. The author managed to incorporate all requested design modifications, thus improving particularly the shape of Rastislav's imagined portrait and the shape of his helmet typical for that period. The ruler's portrait is accompanied by a cross from the Great Moravian period found at the archaeological site in Mikulčice. The main element on the obverse is a ground plan of a church in Devín complemented by Glagolitic lettering. Of particular note is the author's apt use of historical elements characteristic for the period, yet rendered using a contemporary sculptor's language of expression. The quality of the design is enhanced by the harmony achieved between the obverse and the reverse, as well as by the historical lettering bordered by decorative pearled patterning.

The second prize in the competition was awarded to a design by Branislav Ronai. The modified design also represented a significant improvement, particularly as regards Rastislav's portrait. The clear composition of the reverse side, featuring the portrait, is accompanied by aptly positioned lettering. On the obverse, the author depicted the Thessalonian brothers Constantine and Methodius who, supported by Rastislav, performed multiform missionary, organisational and cultural activities in Great Moravia. Their arrival laid the inception for Rastislav's plan to create a separate Slavonic religious province and to ensure the legitimacy and sovereignty of Great Moravia - the oldest Slavonic state in central Europe.

A third prize was not awarded in the competition.

The gold collector coin is due to be issued in November 2014.
