Wikipedia:

Karl Otto Fazer (16 August 1866 – 9 October 1932) was a Finnish businessman, and sport shooter.

He was born in Helsinki and died in Jokioinen. He had four children and was the grandfather of Peter Fazer. His father, Eduard Peter Fazer (originally Fatzer), was a Swiss-born furrier.

Fazer studied baking in Berlin, Paris, and Saint Petersburg before becoming a pioneer of Finnish confectionery. Together with his wife Berta he opened a French-Russian confectionery at Glogatan (Kluuvikatu) 3 in Helsinki on 17 September 1891. Later he opened a chocolate and candy factory in Rödbergen (fi: Punavuori).

Fazer, the company he founded, is still in existence. Many of its products have become classic. This is particularly true of the "Fazer Blue" ("Fazerin Sininen" in Finnish, "Fazer blå" in Swedish), a brand of chocolate that is often compared to salmiakki, as a candy that is a part of the Finnish national identity. The (Swiss) recipe for the Fazer Blue was received into the family as a gratitude to Karl Fazer's son Sven Fazer for taking care of a sick boy. The same recipe has been in use ever since 1922, when the chocolate was introduced to the market in its characteristic blue packaging.

Karl Fazer was a nature lover, birdwatcher, hunter and a fisherman. He founded many natural parks in Finland.

He was also an excellent marksman, and he participated the Olympic Games in 1912 with the Finnish shooting team. He placed twelfth in men's trap and fifth in men's team clay pigeons.

Karl Fazer and Finnishness collector coin € 10

Fi2016KF-4.jpg
The Karl Fazer and Finnishness collector coin will be minted in honour of the 150th anniversary of Karl Fazer, a pioneer of the Finnish confectionery industry. The collector coin's reverse depicts the fruit of the cocoa tree. Karl Fazer was also a great nature-lover and bird enthusiast, and the plumage pattern of the grey partridge is embossed on the collector coin's obverse to pay tribute to this aspect of his character. The collector coin is designed by Kirsti Doukas.

The maximum mintage of the EUR 10 silver Karl Fazer and Finnishness collector coin is 10,000, and 150 coins will be numbered. The number is stamped on the coin's reverse, and the numbered coins will be mixed into the mintage at random.

Proof-quality Karl Fazer and Finnishness collector coins are minted with a polished die, finished, and placed in a protective clear plastic casing set in a gift box that tells the coin's story.

Karl Fazer's name is still on everyone's lips in Finland

Karl Fazer (1866–1932) was a master confectioner and pioneer of Finnish candy-making who obtained his training abroad. He was ahead of his time in many respects: in addition to the quality of his products, Fazer was equally passionate about packaging, advertising and customer service. The coffee shops and confectioneries opened by Fazer were highly popular and quickly became a part of the cultural life of Helsinki. The café and confectionery on Kluuvikatu 3 in Helsinki was opened in 1891 and remains operational to this day. Fazer established a confectionery factory in 1897.

Karl Fazer was also a great nature-lover and avid amateur ornithologist. His love of birds is reflected in the feather pattern on the reverse of the collector coin designed by Kirsti Doukas. In 2016, 150 years will have passed from the birth of Karl Fazer.

Coinage 2016/I BU Fish of the Baltic Sea
Fi2016BU1.jpg
Fi2016BU2.jpg
Fi2016BU3.jpg
Fi2016BU4.jpg
For the first time, our BU1 coinage will feature Fish of the Baltic Sea as its theme. The first issue in the series is dedicated to what may be the Baltic Sea's most famous fish – the Baltic herring. Perfect for collectors, fishermen or -women, and friends of nature and the Baltic Sea!
The Coinage 2016/I includes the Finnish metal circulation coins of 2016 in BU quality and is the first coinage struck by Mint of Finland with Fish of the Baltic Sea as its theme. A medal with a Baltic herring motif is set at the centre of the coinage. The medal is designed by Erkki Vainio.

Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras)

The Baltic Sea is the world's second-largest brackish inland sea, with a unique ecosystem created by the mixing of fresh and salt water. The Baltic herring is a smaller sub-species of herring living in the Baltic sea. The fish has a blue-green back and silver sides. The Baltic herring is the only saltwater species that is abundant throughout the coastal waters of Finland. The little schooling fish is the most important commercial species in Finland, both in terms of catch amounts and monetary value. Baltic herring is a highly nutritional and diverse fish. However, the recommended intake should not be exceeded, as harmful amounts of dioxins and PCB compounds can accumulate in Baltic herring. The annual Silakkamarkkinat (Herring Market) is one of the oldest heritage events in Finland, having been held in Helsinki since 1743.
